El Niño often adversely affects agricultural production in the Southern Hemisphere, especially countries in Latin America and East Asia, as well Australia. Recent weather forecasts suggest that the current El Niño episode could be one of the strongest on record. However, its impact on commodity prices is likely to be predominantly local rather than global because global markets are currently well-supplied; country-specific factors could have a significant impact on local prices.
