Ghana is considered as one of the most stable and open democracies in West Africa and is one of the major consumers of oils and fats in the West Africa with domestic consumption of 590,000 tonnes in 2012. Ghana presents a great opportunity of Malaysian palm oil players both in oil palm plantation and downstream activities as it is well developed and with reasonably good infrastructure. However, land tenure and ownership are obstacles that need to be overcome if investment in large-scale oil palm plantation is the objective.
Stable and peaceful country, expanding economy and large market size in the West Africa region are important factors that could entice Malaysian companies to consider establishing packaging plant in Ghana, taking advantage of ECOWAS free trade regime.
