Palm oil is a widely consumed vegetable oil in China. It is versatile in its applications and rich in health attributes. The oil has generated significant health and economic benefits to China.

The health benefits

Palm oil has a host of health attributes. For example, palm based shortenings and margarine imported by the Chinese are free from trans fat. Palm olein or palm based cooking oil used by the Chinese reduces blood cholesterol just as effectively as olive oil. Red palm oil, which are mainly imported by China’s confectionery and bakery manufacturers, has more carotenes (pro-Vitamin A) than tomatoes or carrots. Malaysians are planning to promote tocotrienols to China. This product has the ability to prevent the expansion of white matter lesions in the human brain. Tocotrienols may also be beneficial in the management of dementia, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

The Economic benefits

Based on the study done by European Economics research, palm oil has provided a means of income to 929,000 employed in the distribution, processing and sales sector related to palm oil in 2013. This commodity imported has also generated tax revenue of US$0.8 billion and contributed US$7 billion to the country’s GDP.

This presentation explains in detail the health and economic contributions of palm oil in China.
