Morocco is becoming one of the major olive oil producers in the world. Domestic olive cultivation has experienced rapid development in recent years, going from a few thousand hectares just after Independence to 620,000 hectares at present.
Domestic production meets only 29% of the total consumption.Morocco highly depends on imports to meet oils and fats requirements. In 2012, a total of 524.800 tonnes of oils and fats were imported. Soybean oil was the major oil imported recorded at 387.200 tonnes, accounting for 74% of the total imports, followed by palm oil 65,900 tonnes (13%) and sunflower oil 33,100 tonnes (6%). Imports of palm oil are on upward trend and significantly increased by 33% as compared to previous year. |
