Frying Fats Market Potential in Russia and Ukraine

Russia and Ukraine are major producers of sunflower oil, accounting for 70% of the world’s total sunflower oil outputs in 2014. Both countries produced a combined 11.09 million MT out of 16.15 million MT of world’s sunflower oil production in 2014.

Sunflower oil is ubiquitously used for frying, although its physical and chemical properties are not ideal for this purpose. Long heating at high temperature causes deeper changes in sunflower oil than in special cooking fats. Therefore, it is better to use heat-resistant fats for frying, i.e. special frying fats. Frying foods in fat is a widespread cooking method, particularly in the catering sector. Frying fats are used in the confectionary, bakery industries and cookery.

This paper talks about the market price situation of frying fats both in Ukraine and Russia and provides the assessment on the market risks for both countries. In the end, conclusions and recommendations are given to the Malaysian palm oil players who are interested to venture into this sector in this region.
