After years of numerous research and studies evidences, the USA Food & Drug Administration (US FDA) is finally announced its new policy on partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), which also famously known as Trans fat. PHOs are now No Longer Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). The effects of PHOs became clear enough for the FDA, to order it to be removed from the food supply. The FDA is providing a three-year compliance period which will allow industry to gradually phase out the remaining uses or reformulate products without PHOs and seek food additive approval for those uses.

And now, many food manufacturers have begun working to totally remove PHOs from their products and fill the gap left with palm oil. It has become the preferred replacement oil because palm oil is naturally Trans-fat free oil. Being the world’s highest yielding crop, sustainable and globally traded – in addition to its natural characteristic as free of Trans-fat, palm oil and its by-products are the most potentially suitable replacement ingredients and could replace a substantial portion of the PHOs currently on the market.
